Recently, Eurogamer posted an article containing snippets of an interview with Peter Barthalow aka Ravidrath from Reverge Labs about accusations of sexism against Skullgirls because of the art style and certain characters having big breasts and panty flashes.  While Peter does bring up many good points, it’s pretty clear that whoever wrote the article took parts of the interview out of context.  Whether or not it was intentional, it does make Reverge appear as if they’re justifying breast bouncing and panty flashes by the fact that their lead animator is female.

So Alex Ahad, the lead designer on Skullgirls, wrote a nice response to it on his Deviantart.  Unfortunately, because he wrote it on his personal DA account and not a major gaming news site, a lot of people are going to miss out on it.  It sucks because I feel he did an excellent job addressing the double standard that exists today in male and female character designs.  Major respect to Alex, and maybe my linking of his response here can help him gain more exposure among the few people that frequent this site!

EDIT: SRK has it on their front page now!

Millia, Axl, Bridget, and Venom by aimaimoco

Continuing from right where we left off!  You can read the post for Volume 1 for more videos and an explanation for what inspired me to write all this.

My criteria for choosing the best Guilty Gear combo videos was:
1) showcasing something other than just fancy combos, like setups and okizeme
2) good video editing
3) music choice and how well the song syncs up to the video
4) showing something unique

This volume features Chipp, Axl, Venom, and Johnny.  Videos after the break! continue reading…

Silent Force made an earlier post talking about many of the major GG Youtube accounts going down recently, including Kusoru’s 3 accounts for old GGXX #R, Slash, and Accent Core matches and MDKXL which was a huge archive of GGAC combo videos.  Well recently it has been brought to my attention that yet another account, HaruShinobi, has fallen victim.  Just like MDKXL, HaruShinobi had a ton of GG combo videos, and I’m sure he was flagged for the exact same reasons as the others.  I also wanted to add that my friend Rodrigo’s account “Rodoringo” got hit by Youtube as well, and his account contained a good number of old GG #Reload and Slash combo vids that none of these other accounts had.

So I wanted to pay tribute to these guys for mirroring Guilty Gear combo videos all these years with a retrospective of the best videos they’ve showcased.  But obviously this is a problem because their accounts don’t exist anymore.  Luckily, almost every GG combo vid has also been mirrored on Nicovideo.  Nico’s guidelines on copyrighted music are much looser than Youtube’s, so videos uploaded there tend to last much longer.  In addition, many of the greatest GG combo vids were mirrored on multiple Youtube accounts.  Normally I don’t approve of one video getting uploaded to more than one place in Youtube, but I guess it can be helpful when one of those accounts has a high chance of getting taken down.

Painwheel by utrymme

Painwheel finally makes her first appearance on Skullgirls Friday Night Fights!  With Pizzarino playing a solo Painwheel and JMZ playing a Painwheel/Parasoul team, this match gives a good idea of how she plays.  Flight mode looks ridiculously good, haha.  You can also hear the new announcer voiceclip for round start.  It seems to be different in every vid I see, which leads me to believe that the quote is either randomly selected or is picked according to which characters are on point.  The announcer guy says “This battle is all in the mind!” which is very fitting for Painwheel’s character.

There was something I forgot to mention in my last post, and that was at Wednesday Night Fights, there was a piece of paper on the Skullgirls setup that basically explained all the basics of Painwheel.  It had a description of her general gameplan and her unique abilities, along with a breakdown of all her normals and specials.  It’s really nice to see how Reverge is willing to help out people in learning the game instead of just letting everyone navigate blind.

Painwheel’s voice!

Peacock, Valentine, and Painwheel by Yojio

It’s been a while since there was any news about Painwheel since her reveal, but this Wednesday Night Fights at Super Arcade had something special!  The newest build of Skullgirls was brought over, which not only had Painwheel but also had her voice added in!  I was fortunate enough this Wednesday in that my schedule was a bit lighter than usual, so I actually had a chance to go over and play Skullgirls for myself.  I wasn’t able to hear her voice while playing because it’s impossible to hear anything in a noisy arcade.  Looking over the WNF archives, Painwheel doesn’t actually say much.  She mostly just yells and makes painful grunts.  She has a crazy style and some really wacky animations.  I’m pretty excited to see how she develops.

I also noticed that I actually showed up on the stream!  Starting from about 35:32 you’ll get to see me playing solo Parasoul against my friend Chris and his Painwheel/Peacock/Ms. Fortune team who was bodying everyone that night.  It was my first time playing so I wasn’t able to do much, haha.  I should probably look over Parasoul’s move list beforehand the next time Skullgirls is brought over to WNF.
