Painwheel, Filia, and the ASG Crew by Alex Ahad

Filia and the ASG Crew by Alex Ahad

A continuation of the previous post, IPW now has the Painwheel video up, with combos recorded by Mike Z at SoCal Regionals.

Painwheel has some really gruesome looking combos, and as expected her flight mechanics gives her a lot of combo possibilities.  Grab resets seem very feasible with her.  Seems like she can also combo off of her grab special in the corner.  Additionally, the video shows a way to combo into and out of her install super using the stagger induced by her nail projectiles.

EDIT: The Valentine video is up too!  I’m surprised that they recorded this, since Valentine isn’t complete yet.  They haven’t even implemented her supers, and damage values are not finalized so the combos in the video are relatively simple and aren’t very damaging.  Interestingly, she has a Morrigan/I-No style floating dash as well as a Dio Brando inspired knife projectile.

Ms. Fortune by Speeh

Ms. Fortune players get a real treat today!  There was a pretty big Skullgirls tournament at SoCal Regionals 2011 last weekend, and Mike Z ended up recording some Ms. Fortune combos for everyone.  It was recorded by Rin Harasaki, the guy who runs the BBVLog Youtube channel, but the video’s an iPlaywinner exclusive.

There’s a lot of useful information about Ms. Fortune’s move properties that you can take from this video.  Like most other characters, she can combo off of her throw.  On the ground, her decapitation move(where she rolls her head at the opponent like a bowling ball) causes the opponent to get staggered, long enough for her to run over and do a followup combo.  Her decapitation move in the air is actually really good, as it ground bounces an aerial opponent, allowing her ample time to do a followup combo.

The return of Ruu!

Bridget by Bunkyo Takemi

Kansai’s greatest Bridget player and one of the strongest oldschool Guilty Gear players Ruu is back in action!  Some of my friends were actually in contact with Ruu over the years, and I’ve been told that he disappeared from the competitive Guilty Gear scene to become a monk.  Pretty interesting, if not unexpected.

First off, Kansai Ky player Roz recorded a set of 10 matches between Ruu’s Bridget and Samitto’s Chipp(on a camera, unfortunately).  Anybody who has seen the Bridget vs Chipp matchup knows that they tend to take a long time, and these are no exception.  Still, watching these two amazing players go at it is always a spectacle.

Ruu also entered the a-cho GGXXAC ranbat on 12/16, and the videos are finally out!  The a-cho GG ranbats are unfortunately much smaller than they used to be.  You can see just how well Ruu did in the videos below!  It’s amazing that he’s still so sharp after a near 3 year absence.

This is the first video in the set. Look in the video description for links to the next 9 matches.

I have labeled all the player names and characters used in Youtube comments with timecodes, so go ahead and open up the video in Youtube to see them.

EDIT: Post ranbat casuals are now up on GAMEacho!

Tons of new Skullgirls videos on GameTrailers today!  First off is an exclusive Painwheel character walkthrough by Mike Z, in 2 parts.  Lots of valuable information here: pretty much a must watch for anyone who is planning on playing this character.  I really like how she can’t just superjump off the screen and fly there like what is observed all the time in Marvel; it really shows that Mike’s MvC2 experience helped in balancing out her flight mechanic.  Her spin dash special is also really cool, and brings back all sorts of memories of that exact same technique in Sonic 2.

Moving away from the gameplay side of things and diving into artistic territory, Alex Ahad has some commentary on the inspirations of Painwheel’s design and the amount of work that went into making her.  It’s interesting that they deliberately added more hitstop to her attacks to make them feel more heavy.  It’s a nice effect, and it also makes hitconfirming easier with her.  Mike also chimes in with some of the new visual changes that have been implemented in the newest version, including more hitsparks(to differentiate throws, punches, and slashes for example), and a “leader” indicator to show who currently has the lead.  This is pretty useful for matches where both players have different amount of characters, because the ratio system can make it difficult to determine just how much life you have relative to your opponent’s.  And finally, there’s a nice surprise at the end with a quick glimpse at the ninja nurse Valentine, who already has a voice!

The last video is just the weekly Friday Night Fights match, except that none of the players are labeled.

Kitsuen has released a new combo video for EX Johnny in Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus!  EX Johnny is hilarious and has numerous 100% combos due to coins not prorating.  Johnny with dash momentum and comboable supers is so scary.  There are also some creative ways to get re-coins in combos which utilize projectile movement during superflash.
